It’s time to upgrade your kitchen and you’re thinking of what countertop to go for. Granite? Marble? Wood? These are some of the first few materials that people come up with when imagining their new kitchen counters. However, if you’re looking for something unique and different, why not consider a glass countertop –specifically a glassos kitchen countertop.
What is Glassos?
Glassos is a man-made material with a wide range of applications. It can be used as floor tiles, tabletops, backsplashes, and of course, kitchen countertops. It’s made with crystallized glass. These crystals are sintered and combined with other minerals, fusing them all together under intense heat and pressure. Afterwards, the slab is polished resulting in a glass material that looks very similar to Thassos white marble.
However, even if glassos countertops look very similar to its white marble counterpart, they have very different properties.
Pros of Glassos Countertops
Aesthetically Pleasing. Many people love the look of marble. It’s a classic look that fits well in many different kitchen styles and designs. Because glassos is made to look similar, it too shares the same timeless appeal.
Resistant to Stains. Unlike marble, however, glassos is non-porous. This makes it ideal in a kitchen, where spills, messes, and mishaps can happen frequently. Even if you spill some orange juice, you won’t have to scramble for cleaning supplies as it won’t seep through a glassos countertop.
Moisture-resistant. Another benefit of it being non-porous is that glassos is a great material for wet areas such as kitchens and bathrooms. It does not absorb moisture, meaning fewer chances for mold and mildew to form. As an added bonus, glass is also bacteria resistant!
Low Maintenance. As with most glass surfaces in our homes, glassos countertops are also very easy to clean. All you need is a soft cloth paired with a glass cleaner, and you’re good to go.
Heat Resistant. Another factor that makes glassos perfect for your new kitchen counter is its high resistance to heat. There’s no need to worry about accidentally placing hot pots or pans over it. Unlike with other materials, you won’t leave any burn or scorch marks on a glassos counter.
Cons of Glassos Countertops
Chips and Scratches. While it’s relatively hardy and durable, glass is not immune to chipping and scratching. Take care as not to drop heavy objects on a glassos countertop, especially at the edges. Also, make sure to use chopping boards and place your pots on trivets. These will go a long way to keeping your counter in pristine condition!
Fingerprints Show Easily. As with most glossy and smooth surfaces, fingerprints and smears show on glass. It’s not a big issue, by any means, but it can definitely be an annoyance for some homeowners. Make sure you regularly wipe down your counter to stay on top of this small issue.
Higher Costs. This is the primary drawback for many thinking of this unique countertop material. A glassos kitchen countertop is more difficult to handle and install compared to more common materials. This translates to higher professional installation fees.
Is a Glassos Countertop for You?
A glassos countertop is arguably one of the most elegant options for a kitchen countertop. They look clean and bright, plus they work well with a variety of styles.
