When you walk into your bathroom every morning, do you feel annoyed, unhappy, and dissatisfied? At first glance, everything may seem to be functioning fine, but chances are there’s something you might be overlooking. Something that’s negatively affecting your morning shower experience. It might actually be the bathroom itself.

We put our bathrooms through constant wear and tear every single day. The vanity gets dinged; we drop things on the tiled floor, and sometimes forget to thoroughly clean the corners. If you’ve always had the same bath for as long as you’ve lived in your house, maybe it’s time for an update. We list below some surefire signs that it’s time for a bathroom renovation.

THERE ARE SIGNS OF DAMAGE

Check around the toilet, the shower, the bathtub. Are the tiles cracked? Is the paint on your walls coming off? What about on the cabinets? These can be early signs of water leaks. And we’re not just talking about that faucet that slowly drips all day. Water can be leaking along the pipes you can’t see, and this can cause structural damage. Another result of excess water is the growth of mold and mildew. Not only does this make your bathroom look

gross, but it can also seriously affect your health as well. If these symptoms are ignored for too long, the damage becomes harder to repair, and you’ll end up with a costlier renovation in the future.

When the pipe’s getting rusty and the sink looks beat up, it’s definitely time for a makeover.

IT’S OUTDATED AND OUT OF STYLE

Does your bathroom look like it’s stuck in the 60’s or 70’s? While it may have been the most attractive style during your grandma’s time, it might not suit you and your more modern sensibilities. Having a decades-old design often also means that your bathroom hasn’t been remodeled in a really long time. That probably means that the fixtures and plumbing are also outdated. Along with possible decades worth of damage, it’s probably time for some serious rehabilitation.

IT FEELS TOO SMALL

There are many reasons why your bathroom feels so cramped and hard to move in. The layout of fixtures may not be optimal for its size. Maybe yours is an older property, and those usually come with minimal bathroom space. Another reason is that your family may have just simply outgrown your small bathroom. More family members mean you need more space. Even if you can’t tear down a wall and change the absolute size of the room, there are still ways to open up more space and make it more functional. Even something as simple as changing the size of your fixtures and changing the layout can make a world of difference.

THERE’S NOT ENOUGH STORAGE

In relation to feeling small, you may also have a storage problem. Having your bathroom necessities scattered all over can make your space look and feel cluttered. If you keep buying store-bought organizers, they can take up more space than needed. This makes your bath feel even more cramped. Make sure things like your hairdryer, toiletries, and cleaning products all have a dedicated space by adding some much-needed shelves and cabinets. Not only will it be easier to find where everything is, a clean and organized bathroom looks and feels more luxurious.

YOU NEED TO ADD SAFETY FEATURES

As we grow older, our needs also change. If a senior in your family started using a walker or wheelchair, then the bathroom needs to be updated to accommodate their needs. This may include some accessibility features. Common modifications include adding handrails and changing out the bathtub for a walk-in shower. Generally, you want to ensure that there’s plenty of space to move around, so you might need to expand your bathroom as well.

YOU PLAN ON SELLING THE HOUSE

While it holds true that the kitchen is the most important area to renovate when you sell your house, the bathroom is a close second. An updated modern bathroom renovation can increase the market value of your home. An atrociously awful toilet and bath, on the other hand, can be an absolute deal-breaker. If you have any plans to sell your home down the line, then a full-blown bathroom renovation is a worthwhile investment.
